- Salon de Francfort 1987 : une étonnante voiture trône sur le stand BMW. Le constructeur bavarois vient en effet de dévoiler un roadster (le deuxième d'après-guerre avec l'iconique 507) aux lignes tendues qui se singularise par des portes┤ escamotables. Un vrai bond vers le futur, le Z signifiant d'ailleurs zukunft (futur en allemand) !~
- On aurait pu penser qu'il s'agissait d'un prototype de salon, mais il n'en fut rien puisque le Z1 sera produit en série à très exactement 8 000 exemplaires entre juillet 1988 et juin 1991. Un succès réel mais limité en raison d'un prix de vente élevé. Pour développer ce drôle d'engin, les ingénieurs BMW sont partis d'une plateforme galvanisé de 325i, modifiée par le carrossier Baur, habitué à transformer des 2002 en cabriolets dans les années 1970, avec certains renforts qui firent de la Z1 l'un des cabriolets les plus rigides de tous les temps, un train arrière multibras spécifique, un arceau intégré aux montants de pare-brise et un inédit fond plat.~
- La carrosserie, en fibre de verre, a été sous-traitée aux Etats-Unis, chez General Electric Plastics, tandis que les très exclusives portes escamotables ont été étudiées chez┤ Matra ! Les sièges « à coque » sont habillés d'une sellerie camouflage en cuir et nubuck. Sous le capot avant à la cinématique originale, on retrouve le 6-cylindres de 2,5 l et 170 ch lui aussi emprunté à la BMW 325i E30. Niveau freinage, la Z1 inaugure chez BMW le système ABS. Le roadster Z1, véritable vitrine de la marque, fut la première grande série Z du constructeur bavarois, avant la Z3 qui arrivera en 1995.~
- L'exemplaire que nous présentons est une Z1 de 1990 combinaison de couleur noir sur noir. Le propriétaire actuel a acquis cette voiture il y a environ 20 ans, et s'en est régulièrement servi. Le compteur a été changé (le compteur d'origine est fourni avec la voiture) et la voiture totalise aujourd'hui un peu plus de 100 000 km.~
- La voiture est équipée de jantes accessoires et d'un volant Momo, mais vendue avec jantes et volant d'origine. Elle possède par ailleurs un très rare et recherché Hard Top Wiesmann. Elle est prête à prendre la route !~

- Frankfurt Motor Show 1987: an astonishing car takes pride of place on the BMW stand. The Bavarian manufacturer has just unveiled a roadster (the second post-war model after the iconic 507) with sleek lines and a distinctive feature: retractable doors. A real leap into the future, with the Z standing for Zukunft (future in German)!~
- One might have thought that this was a showroom prototype, but this was not the case, as exactly 8,000 Z1s were produced between July 1988 and June 1991. It was a real success, but limited due to its high price tag. To develop this unusual vehicle, BMW engineers started with a galvanised 325i platform, modified by coachbuilder Baur, who was accustomed to converting 2002s into convertibles in the 1970s, with certain reinforcements that made the Z1 one of the most rigid convertibles of all time, a specific multi-link rear suspension, a roll bar integrated into the windscreen pillars and an unprecedented flat bottom.~
- The fibreglass bodywork was subcontracted to General Electric Plastics in the United States, while the highly exclusive retractable doors were designed by... Matra! The bucket seats are upholstered in camouflage leather and nubuck. Under the front bonnet with its original kinematics is a 2.5-litre 170 hp 6-cylinder engine, also borrowed from the BMW 325i E30. In terms of braking, the Z1 introduced ABS to BMW. The Z1 roadster, a true showcase for the brand, was the Bavarian manufacturer's first large Z series, preceding the Z3 which arrived in 1995.~
- The model we are presenting is a 1990 Z1 in black on black. The current owner acquired this car about 20 years ago and has used it regularly. The odometer has been replaced (the original odometer is included with the car) and the car now has just over 100,000 km.~
- The car is fitted with accessory rims and a Momo steering wheel, but is being sold with the original rims and steering wheel. It also has a very rare and sought-after Wiesmann hard top. It is ready to hit the road!~
